May 1 through November 30 is eloquently called the Green Season in Costa Rica. The weather isn’t quite as good, and it rains a bit in the afternoons. The hardest rains occur in October. But there are upsides! Airfares to Costa Rica are usually lower from the US, Canada, and even Europe. Most hotels offer attractive Green Season rates during this period. You can get some great deals.
Of course, the fish still bite. Furthermore, summer is the kids’ vacation time. So bring the whole family for a wonderful Costa Rica fishing vacation.
There are always billfish – marlin and sailfish – offshore along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Also, you can target dorado (mahi-mahi), especially when the rains bring down the silt and plants from the river mouths into the ocean. Yellowfin tuna are an equally big attraction. Inshore there are prized roosterfish, snapper, grouper and other species.
For the adventurous, May-October is the best time for exciting overnight adventures for marlin and sailfish at the FADs/Seamounts. Charter a trip with master Captain Bobby McGuinness out of Golfito on Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast.
September through November is the peak tarpon and snook season on the Caribbean side.
No matter where you might choose – Jacó/Los Sueños or Quepos/Pez Vela Marina on the Central Pacific coast; Tamarindo or Flamingo on the North Pacific; Golfito or Puerto Jiménez on the South Pacific, or any other top Costa Rica fishing destination – you will have a wonderful time. And of course, you will enjoy exciting action and catch lots of fish with our excellent, experienced Costa Rica sportfishing charter captains.
Don’t be afraid! The fish certainly aren’t! They’ll be biting.
