Late March Sees Incredible Striped Marlin Action

The last 7 years have been very good and provided decent to excellent striped marlin numbers out of Santa Cruz and San Cristobal islands.  However, March 22 to 28 have been fantastic with most days 30 to 100 plus raises of large striped marlin!  The banks near Española Island have seen the hottest striped marlin fishing in 2023.

When a season gets better as time goes on the bite can be even hotter in April, May and June so don’t wait to come down!  This is one of the few places in the world where you can possibly enjoy marlin feeding frenzies, sea lions, sharks, sea lions and birds diving all in the same day.  Striped marlin grow big in the Galapagos with some fish reaching 300 pounds.

First Ecuagringo/Sportfish Galapagos International Marlin Tournament Coming 2024

The two longest running outfitters in the Galapagos have joined forces to bring anglers the first international billfish tournament of its kind in 2024.  We will be announcing dates jointly in the coming weeks.  The tournament will be named “StarrGus” in honor of legendary Galapagos captains Alan Starr and Gustavo Hernandez.  Stay tuned for more complete information in weeks to come.  There will be well known fishing names in the mix, celebrities and all around good folks so don’t miss out.

Galapagos Islands Are An Almost Do It All Fishery?

The Galapagos Islands are arguably the best year round place to target large striped marlin in double digit raises daily on average. Did you know there is  more than the striped marlin?  Anglers can target blue marlin, mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna and unending structure for bottom fishing.  Pitch baiting to marlin, fly fishing for marlin and various pelagic species, casting poppers to surface tuna, jigging or cut bait bottom fishing are all for the trying in the Galapagos.

While the various methods of fishing are practiced worldwide, the Galapagos stand out in that you may be successful at almost any method you try.  This is why it is so important to choose an outfitter that can deliver almost any type of fishing that you want to do.  Ecuagringo is the first and longest running fishing outfitter that started the famous striped marlin fishery 24 years ago.

We have taken the time to train crews in various fishing techniques and continue to invest in having the most complete custom tackle in all of the Galapagos Islands. We are the only outfitter to offer boats to fish all three main islands.  By 2024 we will be the first and exclusive outfitter to have all Mako reels for fly fishing, Alutecnos Italian reels on all our boats for trolling and mostly custom made in USA rods.  Quality tackle is important but so is a crew that knows how to use it.

Ballyhoo & Circle Hooks Back For All Ecuagringo Boats 2024

Ecuagringo, the leading outfitter to start the fishery in the Galapagos Islands will be providing brined ballyhoo acquired from mainland Ecuador and imported from Florida for those who want to pitch circle hook rigged ballyhoo to striped marlin.  We believe it will significantly increase the catch ratio for anglers who are experienced at pitching baits to billfish.  There is perhaps no cooler bite than watching a marlin tease up and eat a bait fed in front of it!

40 Ft “Golden Reel” Sportfisher Expected To Finally Be In Service 2024

The newest addition to the Ecuagringo fleet will be a new 40 ft custom sportfisher captained by Julio Rodriguez.  As with most of the red tape getting papers and proper licensing seems to never be an easy task in the Galapagos. We were hopping to be able to offer the boat late this season but will be providing updates as folks have been trying to book already.
