Galapagos Islands Marlin Fishing Report
Thanks to waters remaining 76 to 77 F through most of the Galapagos locals fishermen and crews are reporting a mixed bag bite. Striped marlin, blue marlin, black marlin & tuna action has been relatively good. There is no better time to fish the Galapagos than right now as conditions have been almost perfect for anything you want to fish for.
July to November are considered slow tourist season in the Galapagos but fishing can be fantastic when conditions are right and anglers take advantage. Ecuagringo fishes more than anyone else here with prime boats and crews available to fish all year long. We bring you the most consistent reports almost week after week and year round.
When we don’t have anglers fishing we send out our crews to test the waters on pangas and sometimes on the sportfishers. No one else spends the time, money and effort to keep you informed and that is part of why we have been the pioneers and leading outfitters since 1998 in the Galapagos.
San Cristobal Island Report
Oct 8, 2023– Captain Julio Rodriguez set out onboard a panga to get us a fishing report from Rosa Blanca Bank. Trolling only two 50#s with lures he reported raising 39 striped marlin and 1 nice blue marlin around the Honey hole. Only fishing with his son they went 11 for 23 on lure bites releasing 10 striped marlin averaging 150 to 210 pounds and 1 blue estimated at 400 pounds.
They also caught 3 mahi mahi and two yellowfin tunas. The action simply put is phenomenal out of San Cristobal. Lots of sardines and life on top of the bank will make for an entertaining show.
Santa Cruz Island Report
Oct 7, 2023– Captain Yuri Gutierrez onboard Patricia headed to 0-30 Bank in search of striped marlin with anglers from mainland Ecuador. They raised 9 striped marlin releasing 5 on pitch baits and 20# Alutecnos Veloce reels on 30# standup rods.
This superior tackle will make any anglers stand up experience much more enjoyable. About mid day they hooked into a nice black marlin estimated over 400# that they fought on the 30# standup for over an hour before grabbing the leader and being able to safely release it. They caught a couple of tuna and one mahi that would make for a nice dinner.
Oct 8, 2023– Captain Gutierrez returned with Patricia to fish 0-30 Bank with guest from Ecuador. They raised 14 striped marlin had 9 bites and released 4 on pitch baits. They also caught a very nice yellowfin tuna estimated around 90 pounds and lost a second one of similar size.
Oct 9, 2023– Final day for anglers from Ecuador fishing onboard Patricia as they headed to 0-30 Bank and brought some 80# and 130# gear to fish the edges and drops of the bank for bigger marlin. Willing to pass up the more numerous striped marlin bite for the bigger blues and blacks patience is necessary. Things were pretty quiet until around 11:15 am when fishing about a mile and half off the bank in an area known as the Bullseye.
They raised a black marlin around 300# which ate the right short with an Iland Express rigged with a ballyhoo. Fish put on a show and spit the hook about 10 minutes into the fight. Things were pretty quiet working the edge of the bank until about 2:30 pm when a tremendous and violent bite knocked the long right and sent the 130# Alutecnos screaming. It took a few seconds but the enormous head came out of the water and a blue estimated around 900# exposed itself to begin its head shake.
Unfortunately, fish was bill wrapped and all it took was one shake too many and the Senior Wide Range Texas Turd (brown and pink) lure went flying back toward the boat. Heartbreaking to say the least but this is fishing.
